Container Extreme Gardening

Apartment living in the city may be necessary as it offers many time saving conveniences such as being close to work, leisure activities, and shopping.  Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks is the lack of space for gardening and having a lawn.  Landscaping, gardening and lawn care are stress reducing activities that don’t have to be given up because of city dwelling.  Container gardening offers a cost effective solution to having fresh, delicious, and nutritious vegetables and flowers no matter how space challenged you may be in your current living abode.  The first step to take is deciding where you can locate the garden.

Once that is determined you will need to select containers that you want to use.  Common ones include: planter boxes, wooden barrels, hanging baskets, large flower pots, etc.  There is no shortage of items that can be used, and you are only limited by your creativity.  Containers with narrow openings should be avoided; as well as, pots made of cheap plastic that could deteriorate as a result of UV sunlight, terracotta pots that don’t hold moisture well and will dry out quickly.  If you are using wood containers, redwood and cedar are good choices that are rot resistant and can be used without the additional step of painting or staining.  Keep a journal of containers used and make notes of what grows well in each one to aid in future gardening attempts.

Now that the container selection is complete you can move on to seed selection.  Where your garden is located and what type of sunlight it is receiving and at what time of day will play heavily into what will best produce in your garden.  Seed packets come with detailed growing instructions that will help you make that decision.  With a little research and patience you will become an innovative green thumb in no time at all.
