Taking good care of your lawns can be a problematic and sometimes troubling issue that many home owners face. Having a badly maintained lawn can be a bad reflection of your lifestyle and financial status, as it is the usually the first thing seen in a home. Here are a few tips which may be helpful.
Grass grows and spreads on its own; no special method is involved with this. Putting extra chemicals and salts into the grass as advertised by some companies can do more harm than good, and may even damage the soil. When watering; it is not necessary to water the grass every day, which may cause improper growth in the roots. The two main factors deciding watering are growth height and season. When the grass is in the early growth stages; at least one inch of water every three days is recommended. In hot weather, more water will be necessary.
Experts recommend mowing the grass at one third of its height to avoid patchy growth. Raking should be done regularly, as stray leaves can block the light and air necessary for the grass to get the nutrients needed. Fertilizer should be applied before laying the grass, by putting around an inch of compost or other types of cattle feed. There are several types of chemical and natural fertilizer used for treating problems with grass such as mildew, brown patches and insects and bugs.
There are a few types of grass as well; cool and warm season grass, with the former staying green in winter and the latter being green in the summer. The right type should be selected in accordance with the temperature of your region. Lawn care can be simple, if proper preventive measures are taken; which include proper watering, mowing and fertilizing to ensure healthy green grass.
