WAVE SWEEP BEACH SOCCER XPERIENCE Tight defense rules day at Bradford Beach; Wave ekes out 2-1 win MILWAUKEE (June 20, 2009) -- Superb play by both goalkeepers ruled the second Beach Soccer Xperience match Saturday at Bradford Beach, but the Milwaukee Wave managed to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Storm to sweep the two-game exhibition series. Days of rain last week gave way to brilliant, hot sunshine on game day and Milwaukee's most popular beach was packed with soccer fans and curious onlookers as the Wave and Storm of the Xtreme Soccer League played a match under FIFA rules. The match will be broadcast by Sports 32 on Time Warner Cable in Milwaukee at the following times: 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 26; 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27; and noon Sunday, June 28. Marcel Feenstra of Milwaukee and Jeff Richey of Chicago were the stars of Saturday's game, each one denying a half-dozen golden scoring chances and triggering their offenses with long outlet passes. The Wave's Giuliano Oliviero snuck one past Richey in the first of three periods to put the home team on top, with Feenstra receiving the assist. The rest of the scoring took place just seconds apart in the second period. Will Kletzien of the Storm triggered the tying goal with a sideline throw-in close to the Wave end line. Kyle Lance -- a native of nearby Franklin, Wis. -- got just enough space from his mark to one-touch a left-footer past Feenstra from right in front. But on the following kickoff, Oliviero scooped a high ball to reserve player Tony Constancio down the right wing, and he took a touch and then rifled a shot past Richey. Milwaukee had won the previous weekend's matchup at Chicago's Montrose Beach, 8-5. Beach soccer is played with four field players and a keeper, with three 12-minute periods. Goals are wide, shots are often taken right from the kickoff and scoring is high. Many of the runs and patterns are derived from futsal, which has a great influence on the XSL game. Both teams continue their offseason exhibition play next month with Summer Soccer Showcase games in their home arenas. The Wave host the Ultimate Soccer League All-Stars on July 8, and the Storm follow July 15 against the same opponent. Tickets for both games are available by calling the Wave (414-224-9283) or Storm (1-866-STORM-81) respectively. Founded last summer by the Milwaukee Wave, Detroit Ignition, New Jersey Ironmen and Chicago Storm, the Xtreme Soccer League is more than an indoor soccer league. The Xtreme Soccer Xperience is an energetic and innovative 12-month sports lifestyle brand built around skilled soccer professionals, entertainment and fan participation -- both live and online. The Detroit Ignition claimed the first XSL championship in April. For more information, visit XtremeSL.net. |
